People’s opinions on compulsory te reo Maori

The following links compulsory te reo 1 and compulsory te reo 2 highlights people’s opinion about compulsory te reo Maori in mainstream education.

I think one of the biggest issues this kaupapa faces is the lack of resources, which causes this to be a slow process. For example, the lack of te reo teachers in mainstream education; minimal te reo educators and professional developers to train teachers and bring them up to a high standard in methodology and communicative competence in te reo, minimal training resources to assist teachers’ in their professional development, the need for Maori language experts to engage this kauapapa and be more involved in the design and implementation of a National Language Plan, curriculum framework and policy making for te reo, and a need for wider national support, including the Government are just some of the critical issues that this cause faces. Exploring and addressing these issues now can quicken the process of this kaupapa in becoming a reality.
