What’s in a macron?

“Small things bring about big changes” mwt

The following newspaper article at Stuff.co.nz featured a debate about the use of marcons in te reo Maori pronunciation.

How important is a macron, if at all, to the Māori language? It is critical in both oral and written text.

Te =
Tē =

How do you know which one is which? What is the sound each one would make? Do you think it’s important to have a system like macrons and why? Is there another system that can be used instead of macronisation?
